Sleep
Getting enough sleep helps you stay slim
Looking to avoid obesity? Get some sleep. Columbia University researchers have found a strong connection between getting enough sleep and keeping off the pounds. “It seems somewhat counterintuitive,” confessed researcher James Gangwisch, a Columbia epidemiologist — after all, you burn fewer calories when you’re asleep. But the study of some 18,000 adults concluded that those sleeping less than seven hours a night had an increased risk of obesity. The extra risk ranged from 23 percent among six-hour sleepers to 73 percent for night owls getting only two to four hours shuteye. Sleep deprivation, researchers noted, lowers the level of lepitin, a protein that suppresses appetite, and increases grehlin, which makes you want to eat.
